Commander (retired) Harold Edward Spragge, (27 September, 1894 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Lt. Colonel Spragge, D.S.O. of H.M. Body Guard.[1]

Spragge saw wartime service in Lion, Racehorse, Mons, and Fury, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1916 in the last. This was altered to 15 April, 1916 and Spragge was next assigned to Minotaur before being sent to Dolphin for training in submarines on 1 April 1918.[2]

Spragge was assigned to Vulcan for service in submarines in late June 1918. On 12 September, this crystallised into an appointment in H 11.[3]

Spragge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1924.[4]

Spragge was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 2 April, 1931 and promoted to the rank of Commander on 27 September, 1934.[5]

World War II

A 1944 fire in a store shed at R.N. Barracks, Kissy (near Freetown) resulted in a Board of Enquiry which faulted Spragge for his fire fighting arrangements and equipment.[6]
