Lieutenant-Commander (retired) William Charles Ovenden (23 March, 1884 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Ovenden was promoted to the rank of Gunner (T) on 11 November, 1912. He was made Acting Mate on 1 August, 1915 as he commenced a six month appointment in the destroyer Myngs.[1]

On 3 February 1916, Ovenden was appointed to the armoured cruiser Sutlej for torpedo duties. Here, he would prove himself "very well organised & efficient" and "useful in promoting amusements & anything tending to the welfare of the ship's c'oy."[2]

Ovenden was appointed to the pre-dreadnought Zealandia on 26 April, 1917. He was promoted as he vacated this appointment to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1917. He was then assigned to the destroyer Grasshopper in October, 1917 and may have assumed command some time later, though this is not explicitly stated anywhere. His appointment in the ship ended on 5 February, 1919.[3]

Ovenden was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 3 May, 1920. On 24 August, he was granted his Master's Certificate by the Board of Trade.[4]

Ovenden was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander (retired) on 1 October, 1925.[5]

World War II

He was appointed to perform N.C.S. duties at Milford from 25 August 1939 to 28 November 1940, at which point he may have resigned.[6]
