Eric Bannerman Tod

Commander (retired) Eric Bannerman Tod, (19 September, 1889 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Wolverhampton.

In June 1910 while appointed to the gunboat Redbreast, Tod had dysentery.

Tod was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1911. He was re-appointed to Swiftsure for a half year, and then to Pathfinder and Commonwealth, during which time he was treated for gonnorhea at Haslar Hospital before being sent to Dolphin for instruction in submarines from 1 November 1912 until 3 March 1913.

When war broke out, Tod had just retired and been placed on the Emergency List to attend to urgent private affairs. For the first year of the war, he was appointed to B 5, where he served as first officer under Lt. Thomas Kerr. He was given his first command in September 1915: the small submarine A 10. He commanded the larger C 26 from April 1916 until being assigned to unspecified service in the Sixth Submarine Flotilla in September 1917.

Throughout 1918, Tod commanded two more capable "patrol"-type submarines, the "E" class boats E 4 and E 33.

Tod was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1919.

Tod was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 23 October, 1932.

World War II

Appointed first to Trade Division in August, 1939.
