Rear-Admiral George William Taylor, C.B.E. (10 May, 1883 – 21 October, 1964)[1] was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Taylor underwent examinations for several days commencing on 20 July, 1897 and gained entrance to the Britannia term of August, 1897, his 1133 marks placing him fifty-sixth in merit among the sixty-three candidates accepted as naval cadets.[2]

Taylor was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1904.[3]

Taylor was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1912.[4]

Taylor was appointed in command of the destroyer Lysander on 21 September, 1914.[5]

Taylor was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915.[6]

Taylor was appointed in command of the destroyer Retriever on 26 February, 1917.[7]

Post-War

Taylor was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1922.[8]

In August, 1924, Taylor was appointed in command of the light cruiser Dublin.

In May, 1925, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Lowestoft.

Taylor was appointed in command of the battleship Emperor of India in May, 1930.

Taylor was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 24 November, 1934 and placed on the Retired List the following day in accordance with Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[9]

World War II

He was called up for appointment to Pembroke, additional, with a rank of Commodore, Second Class, R.N.R..

He was reverted to the Retired List on 1 April, 1941.

On 27 April, 1942, Taylor was appointed to Malabar in command and as Commodore in Charge of Naval Establishments at Bermuda, serving as Commodore, Second Class. He was re-appointed several times, and was not superseded until 15 January, 1944. He was then sent to Sri Lanka as Commodore Superintendent, Ceylon. He was discharged on 8 February, 1946.[10]

Taylor was reverted to the Retired List on 22 June, 1946.[11]
