Lionel Haultain Phillips
Commander (retired) Lionel Haultain Phillips, D.S.C. (14 November, 1899 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
His father worked in the Indian Civil Service. Perhaps this is why Phillips named his mother his guardian upon joining the service in September, 1912.[1]
Phillips served from 8 September 1915 through 6 January, 1918 in the battleship Conqueror, fighting in her at the Battle of Jutland. On 15 November, 1917, his application for service in submarines was noted. He would instead be enrolled in a nineteen-day Torpedo Control Course in January 1918 and then be appointed to the gunboat H.M.S. Britomart, in which he served through 28 April, 1919.[2]
Phillips was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1920. On 19 September, 1920 he would finally be appointed to Dolphin for training in submarines.[3]
Phillips was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1928.[4]
World War II
Phillips was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 14 November, 1944.[5]
He reverted to the Retired List on 16 October, 1947.[6]
