Macdonald commanded Minerva from 12 June 1914 until 8 January, 1915. This seems to conflict with another man's records.

Macdonald was granted the acting rank of Captain on 28 October, 1915.

Macdonald was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Gibraltar in April, 1918.

Macdonald was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain (retired) on 1 June, 1920.
