Life & Career

Born in Folkestone, Hughes was raised by a guardian, Miss Hughes. His first two appointments were a year spent in Mars of the Channel Squadron, and then two years in Aboukir in the Mediterranean. He returned home in Cressy in January, 1905.[1]

On 30 January, 1906, he was appointed to Argyll. He was admitted to Plymouth Hospital on 17 October 1906. On 15 January, 1907 he was invalided from Argyll, regaining fitness on 1 March.

Hughes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1907.[2]

On 15 September, 1909, he was appointed to Mercury for instruction in submarines.

Hughes was appointed in command of the submarine C 22 on 15 August, 1912.[3]

He was appointed in command of the submarine B 4 on 20 August, 1913.[4]

Hughes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1915.[5]

On 1 April, 1916, Hughes was appointed in command of E 44, but on 4 April it was reported that he had developed measles and would be unable to take up his appointment for three weeks.

On 22 March, 1917, he was appointed to take command of the new submarine Nautilus. She was renamed N 1 before she commissioned.
