Life & Career

Born in Boston, Lincolnshire,[1] the son of A. S. Black, Esq., a farmer.[2]

Black passed out of the Training Establishment on 1 July 1915 and was appointed to the battleship Orion. On 1 April 1918 he was appointed to Vernon to take a twelve day course in Torpedo Control. He then served in the P36 from 13 April to 19 September, 1918 when he was appointed to Dolphin for instruction in submarines.[3]

Black was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1927.[6]

Loaned to Royal Australian Navy for two years, from 3 September, 1927.[7]

Black reverted to the Royal Navy on 29 December, 1929.[8]
