H.M.S. L 16 was one of thirty-five "L" class submarines completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
From at least mid-1927 until at least early 1929, she was with First Submarine Flotilla in the Mediterranean.[7][8]
By mid-1931, she had become one of two "L" class boats in Group "D" Submarines in Reserve at Portsmouth under the collective command of Lieutenant-Commander Eric Philip Arthur Brooks,[9]
She remained so disposed until at least early 1933, though the officer in command changed.[10]
In 1934, her bell, inscribed with her name and perhaps her motto, was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at a price between £1 and £5. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[11]
