Commander (retired) John Pollington Apps, D.S.C. (9 February, 1897 – ) served in the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of B. C. Apps, Esq. transferred into the Royal Navy from the R.N.R. on 26 September 1918. He was re-appointed in the destroyer Zubian, where he had been serving since at least 6 August.[1]
Apps was appointed to the battleship Monarch in April, 1919 and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 9 November, 1919.[2]
On 18 April 1920 he was appointed to Dolphin for instruction in submarines.
Apps was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 9 November, 1927.[3]
On 8 January, 1932 Apps was placed in command of Group "Y" Submarines in Reserve at Portsmouth, which was then three "L" class boats.[4] On 1 June, 1933, he was placed in command of a different group of submarines in reserve under H.M.S. Pigmy that I have yet to identify.[5] This assignment lasted just one month.
Later in 1933 he reverted to General Service, rather than Submarine Service. He was appointed to Effingham, additional, on 18 December, 1933.[6]
Apps was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 18 January, 1934 and promoted to the rank of Commander on 9 February, 1937.
