The Deputy First Sea Lord was an officer on the Board of Admiralty of the Royal Navy. The position was connected mainly with the field of operations - he was head of the Operations Committee of the Naval Staff and represented that body on the Maintenance Committee and therefore spared the First Sea Lord from the minutiae of the everyday staff work.
