"M" Class Destroyer (1914)
Thirteen of sixteen (or twenty?) destroyers of the "M" Class in the 1913-1914 programme were completed, six to Admiralty design and 7 Specials (2 each from Hawthorn Leslie and Thornycroft, and three from John Brown).[1]
They were improved "L" class destroyers with 6 knots more speed.[2]
Performance
Armament
Guns
They carried three 4-in QF Mark IV guns on P IX mountings as in the preceding "L" class destroyers.[3]
Torpedoes
As in the preceding class, they had two twin 21-in tubes on the centre line (4x2) enjoying 50 degree arcs centered on the beam.[4]
Other Weapons
They may have carried one (later 2) 1-pdr HA guns (later 2-pdr) as well as 4 mines on the upper deck.[5]
Fire Control
By 1915, at least, these ships also had fixed voice pipes installed between decks with the last lengths being flexible (one voice pipe for gunnery, one for torpedoes) fitted between bridge and guns, torpedo tubes, and searchlights. A third voicepipe, entirely flexible, ran from bridge to the forward gun.[6]
