Schoonmaker was appointed to command the screw sloop Vandalia on 5 April, 1888.[6]

Vandalia, along with the frigate Trenton and the gunboat Nipsic arrived at Apia, Samoa during the spring of 1889 in response to a diplomatic crisis which saw seven warships from three different nations converge on the islands. On 15/16 March Apia Harbor was battered by a violent hurricane which wrecked all but one of the ships present. Vandalia was among those lost, and Captain Schoonmaker was among the forty-three officers and men lost with her.[7]
