Completed in 1903, H.M.S. Russell was the first of six battleships of her class to be commissioned in the Royal Navy.
Service
Russell was launched at Jarrow-on-Tyne on 19 February, 1901, by Mrs. McLaren, wife of Charles McLaren, chairman of the Palmer Shipbuilding and Iron Company.[10]
Russell commissioned at Chatham on 19 February, 1903, under Captain Alfred L. Winsloe, to relieve the Canopus in the Mediterranean.[11]
She recommissioned at Sheerness on 13 August, 1912.[12]
Russell served in the Fourth Battle Squadron in 1913.[13] At the end of the year, she was serving as flagship to Rear-Admiral in the Home Fleets at the Nore.[14]
