Two Atlanta Class cruisers were completed for the U.S. Navy in the mid-1880s.

Construction
Congressional partisan allegations drove the Atlantas' contracted shipyard, John Roach, into bankruptcy, and both ships had to be completed at New York Navy Yard.[1][2]
