Alexander Milne, First Baronet
Admiral of the Fleet SIR Alexander Milne, First Baronet, G.C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (10 November, 1806 – 29 December, 1896) was an officer of the Royal Navy in the Victorian era, who served twice as Senior Naval Lord on the Board of Admiralty.
Early Life & Career
Milne was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral of the Blue dated 20 January, 1858, vice Ross.[1] He was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, of the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 20 December, 1858.[2]
Milne was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral of the White dated 2 August, 1861, vice Ross.[3] On 14 November he was appointed a temporary Vice-Admiral of the Blue while holding the appointment of Commander-in-Chief on the North American and West Indian Station.[4]
He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral of the Red on 25 June, 1863, vice Grey.[5] On 25 February, 1864, he was appointed an ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, of the Military Division of the Order of the Bath.[6]
Milne was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral dated 12 April, 1865, vice McDougall.[7]
He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 1 April, 1870.[8]
On 26 October, 1876, Milne was granted the dignity of a Baronet of the United Kingdom, of Inveresk in the County of Mid-Lothian.[9] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870 he was placed on the Retired List on 11 November.[10]
In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870, Milne was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet on the Retired List dated 10 June, 1881.[11]
