Rear-Admiral SIR Wellwood George Courtenay Maxwell, K.B.E., C.M.G., D.L. (11 August, 1882 – 9 July, 1965) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Maxwell underwent examinations for several days commencing on 20 July, 1897 and gained entrance to the Britannia term of August, 1897, his 1200 marks placing him forty-sixth in merit among the sixty-three candidates accepted as naval cadets.[1]

Maxwell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.[2]

Maxwell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1912.[3]

Maxwell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915.[4]

After nine and a half months in command of Harpy, Maxwell was appointed as commander in H.M.A.S. Australia on 12 July, 1917 and remained there through 28 August, 1918.[5]

Post-War

Maxwell was appointed in command of the monitor H.M.S. Lord Clive on 15 December, 1920.[6] On 2 February 1922, he became Maintenance Commander on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief at Rosyth.

Maxwell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1922.[7]

In February 1925, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Ceres.

Maxwell was made Captain of Valiant in early 1932.

Maxwell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 31 May, 1934 and was placed on the Retired List the following day.[8]

World War II

Maxwell was mobilised on 26 September, 1938.[9]

He was appointed Naval Officer in Charge, Tyne on 26 September, 1938. On 5 October, he was appointed Flag Officer in Charge, Tyne and remained so until being superseded on 26 August, 1939. On 13 October, 1945 he was appointed District Shipyard Controller. He was superseded on 12 December.[10]

Maxwell reverted to the Retired List on 6 February, 1946.
