Commander Richard Frank Jolly, G.C. (28 August, 1896 – 16 October, 1939) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Jolly's father, a lang agent, was deceased by the time Richard joined the Royal Navy as part of a special emergency term taken into the Training Establishment in September 1914. He was appointed to Princess Royal on 1 May 1915 and fought in her at the Battle of Jutland. He was described as "unintelligent, but tries hard" in Captain Cowan's 1916 evaluation. In August 1917, he was appointed to a Torpedo Control course at H.M.S. Vernon, and then to the destroyer Foxhound on 16 September.[1]

In mid-May 1918 he was appointed to Atherstone for instruction in minesweeping.[2]

Jolly was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on an adjusted date of 15 December, 1918.[3]

Jolly was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 December, 1926.[4]

Jolly was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1932.[5]

World War II

Jolly was graverrly wounded while in command of the destroyer Mohawk during an air raid on the Firth of Forth on 16 October, 1939. Having brought his damaged ship back to port, he died ashore at the Royal Naval Hospital, Port Edgar.[6]
