Life & Career

Dale was born on 26 September, 1840, the son of Mr. Clement Dale.[1] Dale went to Harrow school in 1854, but in his first term received a nomination for the Royal Navy, and was entered as a Naval Cadet in H.M.S. After the customary one year he struck his flag on 1 May, 1895.[14]

After the Kruger Telegram and the increase of tensions with the German Empire a Particular Service Squadron was formed, consisting of Revenge, Royal Oak, Gibraltar, Charybdis, Hermione, and six torpedo boat destroyers. Dale hoisted his flag in Revenge on 14 January, 1896, and the squadron remained in commission until 21 October.[15]
