U.S.S. Octopus was one of five Octopus (or "C") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy.
Service
Octopus was commissioned on 30 June, 1908 with Lieutenant Charles E. Courtney in command.
On 17 November, 1911, she was redesignated C-1.
In 1916, all five "C" class boats were stationed in the Panama Canal Zone, their crews living aboard U.S.S. Severn, assisted by the tug Potomac.[4]
