First Class Protected Cruiser is a generic term for a larger cruiser with a protective deck. The type was often developed in alternation with early armoured cruisers, which were of similar displacement but featured armoured belts.
Other protected cruisers of the second and third class were smaller – apportioned more like the later Light Cruiser.
