H.M.S. Swordfish was an experimental steam submarine in the Royal Navy launched in 1916 and redesignated H.M.S. S 1 on 1 April, 1916.[1]

History

The first steam-powered submarine built for the Royal Navy,[2] she was not a success. On 27 June, 1917, she was renamed back to Swordfish and converted into a surface patrol vessel. She became operational in that role in January, 1918.[3]

  • four 18-in tubes on the broadside, eight torpedoes
