Commander (retired) Gilbert Cockshutt Heathcote, R.N. (4 January, 1883 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Betchworth the son of J. B. Heathcote, solicitor.
Heathcote was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1904.
Heathcote was appointed in command of the destroyer Janus on 1 January, 1910.[1] A Navy List indicates that he was also placed in command of Jason, but his service record only mentions Janus.
Heathcote was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1912.
In April, 1913, Heathcote was permitted to take up an appointment as Administrative Officer in West Africa under the Colonial Office. He was not paid from naval funds in this position, and it was understood that if he remained in the post for three years that he would be retired from the navy. This appears to have been ther case, as Heathcote was placed on the Retired List owing to non-service in accordance with provisions of Order in Council of 8 December, 1903 on 3 May, 1916.
Heathcote was promoted to the rank of Commander on 4 January, 1923.
World War II
Heathcote offered his services, but had "lost power" in his right side, and he was deemed fit for shore service only. He was busy at unspecified work on the boks of President from August, 1939 to July 1940 when he reverted to the Retired List.
