Lieutenant R.N.R. (temporary) John Howell-Price, D.S.O.*, D.S.C. ( – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve. He joined the Royal Australian Navy after the war.
Life & Career
Howell-Price was promoted to the rank of Temporary Sub-Lieutenant R.N.R. on 24 March, 1915. On 20 April,he was appointed to Alcantara for duty with Prize Crews.[1]
Howell-Price was promoted to the rank of Temporary Acting Lieutenant R.N.R. on 5 June, 1915. On 29 February 1916, Alcantara was lost in action with the German raider Template:DE-Greif. In the action, Howell-Price carried out his duties as fire-brigade officer in the passenger accommodation compartment with coolness as his part of the ship was being badly hit. He later played a leading part in getting the starboard boats away. This work earned him a D.S.C..[2]
On 5 April 1916, he was appointed to Titania for instruction in submarines. In June, he was placed in G 6.[3]
Howell-Price was promoted to the rank of Temporary Lieutenant R.N.R. on 24 March, 1917. On 17 July 1917 he was appointed to C 7 as first lieutenant. He would briefly be placed in G 3 in March 1918 and return to C 7 in April. On 23 July 1918, he was awarded a D.S.O. for his role in the Zeebrugge Raid.[4]
In February, 1919, he applied for transfer to the Royal Australian Navy. On 27 February he was appointed to the submarine J 2, and on 6 March, to J 3. He would serve in her until being demobilised on 2 March 1920. He then did, finally, transfer to the R.A.N..[5]
