Admiral Alexander Plantagenet Hastings, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (31 October, 1844 – 7 December, 1925) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 9 August, 1865.[1]
Promoted to the rank of Commander on 19 July, 1870.[2]
Promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1878.[3]
Hastings commanded the armoured frigate Black Prince in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890. His ship was part of Fleet Number 1 playing the role of the Royal Navy fending off attacks on British trade routes.[4]
Hastings was tried by a Court Martial on 29 November 1892 for having negligently or by default hazarding and stranding H.M.S. Howe on rocks at the entrance to Spain's Ferrol Harbour on 2 November. The charge was not proved and he was fully acquitted. A subsequent Court Martial found that the chart was inaccurate. The Admiralty, however, did not concur with this verdict and placed the blame on Captain Hastings and Commander D. L. Dickson.[5]
He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 January, 1894.[6]
Hastings was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 21 March, 1900, vice Lord Walter Kerr.[7]
Hastings was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 28 March, 1901 and was to receive retired pay of £680 per annum.[8]
He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 16 June, 1904.[9]
