Rear Admiral Colby Mitchell Chester, (29 February, 1844 – 4 May, 1932), was an officer of the United States Navy during the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War and the First World War, a unique distinction for an officer on active service.

Life & Career

Chester was born in Connecticut on 29 February, 1844 and joined entered the U.S. Navy on 31 October, 1859.[1]

Chester was promoted to the rank of Captain on 12 June, 1896.[2]

He was appointed as Chief Inspector of the new battleship U.S.S. Kentucky on 23 February, 1899.[3] When she was ready to enter service, he would become her first captain.
