Admiral Herbert Charles Campbell Da Costa, Royal Navy, Retired (18 April, 1865 – 29 December, 1940) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Da Costa was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1899.[1]
His first command was the old corvette Pylades, appointed 3 January, 1903, and ending on 8 June, 1905.[2]
Captain
Da Costa was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1905.[3]
In November 1906, he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Niobe.
In December 1907 he was made Captain of the armoured cruiser Cornwall.
Da Costa assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Challenger the following March.
Da Costa succeeded Captain Henry Venn Wood Elliott in command of the Western Coast Guard District on 3 March 1913.[4]
Da Costa was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 14 June, 1916, and, in accordance with the provisions of the Order-in-Council of 8 December, 1903, was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 15 June.[5]
On 1 April, 1917 Da Costa was appointed a Temporary Captain in the Royal Naval Reserve,[6] being in command of Auxiliary Patrol Area XXII until being superseded on 6 June, 1918.[7]
Da Costa was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 25 November, 1920,[8] and to Admiral on 24 November, 1925.[9]
