Rear-Admiral James Figgins, C.B.E. (1886 – 30 September, 1962) was an officer in the Royal Navy and eventually rose to the rank of Captain, serving in World War II.
Life & Career
Figgins entered the Navy as Boy, Second Class at age fifteen and a half on 9 May, 1902.[1]
Figgins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 November, 1915.[2]
Interbellum
Figgins was appointed in command of the destroyer Saracen on 20 November, 1918.[3]
Figgins married Grace Miller, younger daughter of G. T. Miller on 2 October, 1920.[4]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Tactician on 1 November, 1920.[5]
Figgins was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1926.[6]
Figgins was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1933, becoming the first officer to be promoted to the rank of Captain via the grade of mate.[7]
Attending a War Course in 1934, President Vice-Admiral Domvile rated Figgins, "General Capacity - Below Average; Power of Expression, Vocal - Average, In Writing - Average; Debating Ability - Below Average; Application displayed - Outstanding," writing further, "Keen by the course was rather beyond him, due of course to his past education and training - a pleasant person."
Figgins was awarded the C.B.E. (m) on New Year, 1942.[4]
