Captain (retired) Philip Agnew Bateman-Champain, R.N. (20 October, 1873 – 16 May, 1958) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Bateman-Champain's mother, Lady Bateman-Champain was his guardian when he joined the Navy.
Bateman-Champain was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1895.
Bateman-Champain was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1906.[1]
On 4 June 1908, Bateman-Champain was appointed to Cæsar as executive officer. As he left the ship for an appointment in the training establishment Impregnable in May 1909, Captain Anstruther wrote of his departing Commander, "[h]is qualifications are just what I expect & wish to find in a 2nd in cd." He would remain in Impregnable until being sent to take a War Course in March through May of 1912, when he was appointed in command of H.M.S. Tyne, which was serving as a depot ship for the ships of the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla.
He would ground Tyne off Harwich on 4 July, 1913, attracting an expression of the Admiralty's displeasure and in 1914 be held responsible for five pounds sterling to replace stores lost from Harwich Pier. He was further held to have been slow to report the temporary loss of a secret document from T.B. 36 in 1916, but Bateman-Champain's wartime career was distinguished, as he commanded the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla from 6 September 1914 through to 13 February, 1919 in the acting rank of Captain.
Bateman-Champain was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1920.
