Captain (retired) Arthur Grendon Tippet, D.S.O. (14 June, 1885 – 8 February, 1943) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Tippet was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1909.[1]
On 4 July, 1911 he married Dorothy Denvy Lowther Froome at Parish Church in Bramshot, Hants.[2]
Tippet was appointed in command of the destroyer Bruizer on 10 October, 1912.[3]
On 6 January, 1914, Tippet was appointed in command of the destroyer Bonetta.[4]
Great War
In 1915, Tippet was thanked by the Admiralty for his zeal and ability in helping them work out details of a proposed "submarine seeker."[5]
Tippet was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1915.[6]
Tippet commanded the destroyer Ariel at the Battle of Jutland, where she operated as part of the First Destroyer Flotilla.[7] While in command of Oracle, Tippet helped save lives from the light cruiser Nottingham when she was lost to a submarine on 19 August, 1916. However, he was found at fault in the drowning of a stoker on 30 August, 1916, as Tippet had not set up life lines.[8]
On 12 August 1917, Tippet "displayed a high standard of efficiency" in attacking an enemy submarine.[9] This date matches that when H.M.S. Oracle rammed and sank the U 44 off the western Norwegian coast.[10]
Tippet was appointed in command of the destroyer Windsor on 5 August, 1918.[11]
Post-War
Tippet was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1919.[12]
Tippet was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 September, 1922. He promoted to the rank of Captain on 14 June, 1930.[13]
Tippet served in World War II in a variety of shore-based appointments, having been judged unfit for sea service.[14]
