Harry Rowlandson Godfrey

Vice-Admiral (retired) Harry Rowlandson Godfrey, C.B., D.S.O. (11 October, 1875 – 17 February, 1947) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Godfrey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1898.

Godfrey was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1909.

Godfrey was appointed in command of the destroyer Beagle on 1 February, 1913.

Great War

Godfrey showed great courage in sweeping mines and patrolling inside the Dardanelles and in assisting the embarcation at Cata Telex on April 25/26, 1915.

Godfrey was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1915.

Godfrey was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Vampire on 2 October, 1917.

Post-War

On 4 November, 1919, Godfrey was appointed for temporary duties in the Training & Staff Duties Division to write a destroyer manual. This was done outside the Admiralty and the work extended into 1920, but the rest of the date is not legible. In January, 1921 he was taking a Senior Officers' Technical Course.

He was appointed in command of the battleship Valiant in November, 1924.

Godfrey was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 6 August, 1926 and placed on the Retired List the following day at his own request.

Godfrey was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 2 April, 1931.
