The Imperial Japanese Navy was, like those of Germany and the United States, a rising power in the decades preceding the First World War. Japan's comprehensive victories over China in 1894 and Russia in 1904-1905 altered the balance of power in the Far East and the Pacific. From 1902 until after the Armistice, Japanese seapower was aligned with that of the British Empire following the Anglo-Japanese Alliance.
