Commander on 30 June, 1913.[3]
He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1917.[4]
He was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Australia on 1 September, 1918.[5]
On 5 August, 1919, he was appointed Flag Captain to Rear-Admiral George Price Webley Hope in the light cruiser Cardiff, leading the Third Light Cruiser Squadron.[6]
He served as captain of Centurion from April 1924 until sometime in 1925, and of Queen Elizabeth for a half year from December 1927.
