Rear-Admiral John Claude Hamilton (14 July, 1881 – 30 December, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hamilton was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Hamilton, born in Warrington, Lancashire.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900.
After two appointments to command destroyers, he excelled in gunnery and received several prominent postings as Lieutenant (G): to Mars on 29 October, 1907, directly to Russell on 23 June, 1908, remaining there until 29 March, 1910.
Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1910.
On 3 February, 1912, he was admitted to Chatham Hospital for pneumonia, and was found fit again on the 26th. On 8 June, he went to Lancaster to be gunnery officer, and then to Superb on 8 January, 1913. He would serve in Superb was her gunnery officer through 21 February, 1917.
Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1915.
Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1920.
He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 14 October, 1932.[1]
World War II
Hamilton was appointed to Drake, additional, as Commodore of Convoys, Second Class on 3 September, 1939. On 10 November, he was appointed to Pembroke, additional, to work with the London Convoy Pool.
On 5 July, 1940, he was appointed to the Eaglet to work with the Liverpool Convoy Pool.[2]
Hamilton died aboard M.V. Calcium when she struck a mine and sank with heavy loss of life.[Citation needed]
