Admiral Francis Spurstow Miller, C.B., R.N., Retired (25 November, 1863 – 6 February, 1954) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Miller's promotion to the rank of Lieutenant was dated 22 May, 1885.[1]
Miller was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1897.[2]
Captain
Miller was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1903.[3]
In January 1905, he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Niobe[4] until being appointed to command Hawke on 9 July.[5]
He was appointed in command of Sutlej in May 1906.[6]
He was appointed to command the battleship Goliath on 4 December, 1907.[7]
He was appointed to command the destroyer Duncan in December 1912, serving in her for eleven months.[8]
Miller was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 14 October, 1913.[9]
Great War
On 8 August, 1914, Miller was appointed Rear-Admiral at Scapa Flow.[10]
On 18 May, 1917 Miller was appointed to take charge of the northern division of the naval command in Ireland, taking pressure off the leadership in Queenstown.[11] Miller was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 September, 1918.[12] His title at the close of hostilities was Vice-Admiral, Buncrana, and in charge of the Northern Division of the Irish Command.[13]
Post-War
Miller was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1919.[14]
He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 29 January, 1920.[15] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 June, 1922.[16]
