Captain Robert Lionel Brooke Cunliffe, Royal Navy (15 March, 1895 – 29 November, 1990) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Life & Career
Cunliffe was appointed to H.M.S. King George V on 7 March, 1913 and served in one of her 13.5-in turrets at the Battle of Jutland. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1917.
Post-War
Cunliffe was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, X.
Cunliffe was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1936.[1] He was appointed in command of the escort vessel Milford in December, 1937.
World War II
Cunliffe was appointed in command of the aircraft carrier Illustrious and as Flag Captain and Chief Staff Officer to Rear-Admiral Commanding, Home Fleet on 31 August, 1943, vice Grantham. He held the post exactly one year before being named in command of the Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport as a Commodore, Second Class, vice Tudway.
