Lieutenant (retired) Franklin Earl Chester, (11 November, 1883 – 29 January, 1940) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Chester was born in Ohio. He enlisted in the Navy in approximately 1902 and was warranted Boatswain on 21 December, 1909.[1] He was promoted to the rank of Chief Boatswain on 21 December, 1915.[2]

During World War I, Chester received a temporary commission as Ensign on 1 July, 1917.[3] He was subsequently promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant on 1 July, 1918.[4]

Chester commanded submarine chaser S.C. 240 from March, 1918 to at least April, 1919.[5] Following service ashore, he was appointed to command minesweeper Woodcock from August, 1921 into January, 1922. During this time his temporary commission expired and he reverted to the rank of Chief Boatswain.[6][7]

Chester then rotated through sea and shore assignments, including command of tug Kalmia from 1925 to 1926[8][9] and tug Sagamore from 1930 to 1931.[10]

After a period of medical treatment,[11] Chester was placed on the Retired List in his wartime rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1935.[12] He died in California less than five years later.[13][14]
