Captain (retired) Robert Mends, (9 January, 1889 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
On 15 May 1905, Mends passed out of Britannia with three months' time gained and received an appointment to the battleship Commonwealth. He would spend nearly three years in this first ship. He would also spend seven months in H.M.S. Africa, leaving her on 15 September 1908 to take Section II.[1]
Mends was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1909.[2]
Mends was appointed to Jupiter as gunnery officer on 12 August, 1914. He left her when she paid off on 19 May, 1915 and commenced three months at the Pembroke Gunnery School.[3]
Mends was appointed to the armoured cruiser Warrior on 30 August, 1915 and survived her loss at the Battle of Jutland. On 2 September 1916 he was appointed gunnery officer in the pre-dreadnought Britannia. He was invalided on 17 July 1917 with enteritis.[4]
Mends was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1917.[5]
Post-War
Mends was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1923.[6]
Mends was promoted to the rank of Captain on 7 September 1935.[7]
