Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. Richard Thomas Smailes (5 July, 1885 – ) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Smailes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 9 April, 1915.[1]

Smailes was subjected to a Court Martial on 17 December 1917 on a charge of negligent performance of duty and was reprimanded.[2]

A Court of Enquiry convened on 8 February, 1918 for the grounding of Panther concluded that he was solely to blame. He was to be relieved of command in the wake of the mishap. He finished out the war as first and gunnery officer in the armed merchant cruiser Columbella, proving himself reliable in the view of Acting Captain G. Corbett.[3]

He was demobilised on 12 June, 1919.[4]

Smailes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 8 April, 1923. His Service Record notes "Refused R.D." in 1923.[5]

He was placed on the Retired List on account of age on 5 July, 1930. His name was removed from the Retired List on 26 January, 1943 under Article 225 of the R.N.R. Regulations.[6]
