Admiral of the Fleet SIR James Elphinstone Erskine, K.C.B. (2 December, 1838 – 25 July, 1911) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the latter part of the nineteenth century.
Life & Career
Erskine was born on 2 December, 1838, the second son of James Erskine of Cardross by his marriage to Mary Fagan. He joined the Royal Navy in 1852 and enjoyed a meteoric rise, becoming a Captain in 1868 following command of the Speedwell, 5 guns.
He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 18 January, 1886, vice Baird.[1]
He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 14 February, 1892, vice Baird.[2]
Erskine was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 23 August, 1897, vice Lyons.[3]
In the Queen's Diamond Jubilee honours, Erskine was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 22 June, 1897.[4]
Erskine was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet on 3 October, 1902, in the place of the Earl of Clanwilliam.[5]
