Said Norman MacLeod, one time Private Secretary to the Civil Lord of the Admiralty:
- Pretyman was not the most congenial of my chiefs, but he was certainly the ablest and it was sheer bad luck that he never reached Cabinet rank.[1]
Pretyman was made Chairman of the Admiralty Reconstruction Committee by Sir Eric Geddes.
