Service
In 1905 and 1906, Carnarvon was part of the Third Cruiser Squadron.
The ship completed to full complement at Devonport on 18 June, 1907.[9]
In 1908-10, at least, she was in the Second Cruiser Squadron.[10]
In or around September 1912, Carnarvon collided with King Alfred while turning over gunnery targets. Captain John Douglas Edwards of King Alfred was faulted for the mishap, as his arrangements for exchanging these materials "were not good."
In mid-1913, she was flagship to the Rear-Admiral in the Home Fleets, out of Devonport.[11] During this time, it was decided to purchase a Type 9 Cruiser Auxiliary set for her.[12]
She fought at the Battle of the Falkland Islands on 8 December 1914, avoiding taking any damage in the action.
Captain William Bowden-Smith grounded her on Lichfield Shoal in June 1917. He was subjected to a Court of Enquiry on 9 June which determined he had committed an error in judgment by placing undue confidence in the navigating officer.[13]
Carnarvon was re-commissioned on 16 April, 1919.[14]
