Captain Hugo Meynell Cyril Ionides, C.B.E. (26 February, 1900 – 19 June, 1991) served in the Royal Navy.

As with many men born c. 1899 or later, his Service Records at The National Archives do not reflect activity between 1931 and 1939 or so.

Life & Career

Ionides was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 December, 1921.

Ionides was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 December, 1929.

On 25 August, 1932 Ionides was placed in command of Group "M" Submarines in Reserve at Portsmouth, which was then three "L" class boats.[1]

Ionides was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1933.

World War II

Ionides was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1940.

In 15 May 1943, Ionides was informed that he, as Captain (S), Third Submarine Flotilla, was at fault for having not promptly noted that Template:UK-Vandal had failed to return from patrol.
