Commander (retired) William Ibbett (26 June, 1887 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Ibbett was confirmed in the rank of Mate on 15 February, 1915. Later that year, he applied for service in submarines while serving as a torpedo gunner in H.M.S. Cossack.[1]

Ibbett was promoted to the rank of Acting Lieutenant on 15 December, 1917. He was confirmed in the rank at an adjusted date of 15 August, 1917.[2]

On 20 November, 1920, Ibbett was appointed in command of the two "K" class vessels comprising reserve submarine group "B" at Rosyth: K 14 and K 16.[3]

In 1922, Cdr. Raikes noted that Ibbett was below average as a submarine commander. While he possessed a good physique and demonstrated loyalty, he was notably pessimistic.[4]

Ibbett was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 31 March, 1923 and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1925.[5]

Ibbett was promoted to the rank of Commander on 26 June, 1927.[6]

In September 1937, he was granted permission to proceed to the Antarctic, where he took on work as a temporary Whale Fisher Inspector.[7]
