Commander (retired) John Hely Owen, (5 December, 1890 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
It appears that Owen entered Royal Naval College, Dartmouth directly – part of the Royal Navy's transition from training new cadets in H.M.S. Britannia as the new scheme was being primed.[1][Fact Check]
Early evaluators had uniquely uncharitable terms for Owen: "V. sleepy and has poor ability", "slow, possibly due to ill health", "does his best but is slow."
Owen was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1912. In January 1913 he applied for submarines.[2]
In June 1915, he and Lt. Dering were cautioned to be more careful following the loss of seven one-pound treasury notes.[3]
In November 1915, 18-in R.G.F. Torpedo No. 908 was damaged through inefficiency of a crew trained by Owen.[4]
Owen was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1920.[5]
