The Paymaster Director-General was an appointment in the Royal Navy. On 6 March, 1918, Paymaster-in-Chief Sir John H. G. Chapple was appointed Paymaster Director-General in the Second Sea Lord's office with the relative rank of Rear-Admiral.[1] The pay was a consolidated rate of £1,200 a year. Retirement was "To be compulsory after 5 years' service in the rank of Paymaster Director-General, or at the age of 60."[2] It was therefore apparently in the nature of a temporary rank as upon retirement on 1 July Chapple became a Paymaster-in-Chief on the Retired List.
From 3 October Chapple's successor, Acting Paymaster-in-Chief William M. C. B. Whyte, was given the rank and style of Paymaster Rear-Admiral.[3] This was given legal effect by Order in Council of 8 November.[4] On 20 December, 1919, the post of Paymaster Director-General with the rank of Paymaster Rear-Admiral was formally sanctioned, with retroactive effect from 6 March, 1918.[5] In August, 1918, the Paymaster Director-General's office was 28 West Block in the Admiralty.[6]
