Captain Thomas Cecil Benfield Harbottle, R.N. (Retired) (25 November, 1885 – 17 March, 1968)[1] was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in London, the son of Thomas Benfield Harbottle, the compiler of The Dictionary of Battles (1904), for long ‘a standard reference work.’[2]

T.C.B. Harbottle was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1906.[3]

In February, 1910 he was admonished to be more careful after a collision between C 31 and the ketch The Brothers.[4]

Harbottle was appointed in command of the submarine C 6 on 15 August, 1912.[5]

Harbottle was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1914.[6]

Harbottle was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1917.[7]

Placed on the Retired List on account of age on 1 February, 1928, Harbottle was promoted to the rank of Captain on 25 November, 1930.[8]

World War II

He worked in the Naval Ordnance Inspection Department from 1939 until reverting to the Retired List on 30 September, 1944..[9]
