Commander Thomas Bostock Hill, (15 February, 1894 – 11 September, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Appointed to the heavy cruiser H.M.S. Devonshire on on 10 January 1912, he would serve in her through 11 January 1916, when he was appointed to the sweeping sloop Marguerite.[1]
Hill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1916 and served in Marguerite until being ordered to England on 19 September, 1916. His next appointment was in the flotilla leader Abdiel. He served in her until July 1918, and was then assigned to the armoured cruiser Shannon after an appointment to Thistle was cancelled.[2]
Hill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1924.[3]
In May 1931 he was placed in command of a group of destroyers in reserve, being on the books of H.M.S. Frobisher.
On 1 April, 1938, he was appointed in command of the minesweeper Leda, temporary for trials. Upon her paying off that same year, he was placed in command of a group of destroyers in reserve, on the books of the light cruiser Colombo. On 23 June, Captain Bedford noted that he had allowed more than three glasses of spirits to be placed in his account in contravention of the orders given him by the Senior Officer, Reserve Fleet, Devonport.[4]
Hill was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander (retired) on 15 February, 1939.[5]
World War II
Admitted to Plymouth Royal Naval Hospital for a disease of the nervous system on 9 September, 1939.[6]
