Admiral (retired) Henry Harwood Harwood, K.C.B., O.B.E., R.N. (19 January, 1888 – 9 June, 1950) served in the Royal Navy.
Harwood would earn fame in the Second World War, commanding the heavy cruiser H.M.S. Exeter in the Battle of the River Plate.
Life & Career
Harwood was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 July, 1908.[1]
Harwood was appointed to Sutlej as torpedo officer for the Test Mobilisation and remained in her until 8 March, 1915 when he was sent to H.M.S. Vernon. On 17 August, 1915 he was appointed to Royal Sovereign, to be her torpedo officer upon commissioning.
Harwood was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 July, 1916.
Post-War
Harwood finally left Royal Sovereign when appointed to Southampton as torpedo officer on 19 March, 1919. He also provided torpedo services to the entire Seventh Light Cruiser Squadron, and indeed the Fleet while in this appointment.
Harwood was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1921.
Harwood was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1928.
Harwood was specially promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 13 December, 1939.
Harwood was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 6 February, 1943.
Harwood was placed on the Retired List on 15 August, 1945 and promoted to the rank of Admiral (retired) on 16 October, 1945.
