Rear-Admiral Angus Dacres Nicholl, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., Royal Navy (17 November, 1896 – 12 April, 1977) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Nicholl joined the navy as part of a special emergency term taken into the Training Establishment in September 1914, listing his mother as his guardian. He emerged on 1 January, 1915 and was appointed to the battleship Marlborough.[1]

At the Battle of Jutland he was a midshipman in charge of a 13.5-inch gun magazine handing room in H.M.S. Marlborough. In 1966 he was one of the six British veterans of the action to be present at a meeting of British and German warships at the site of the Battle.[2]

On 19 March 1917, Nicholl was appointed from Marlborough to attend a course in Torpedo Control at H.M.S. Vernon. On 30 March 1917 he was appointed to the H.M.S. P53. On 26 February, 1918 he was appointed to the submarine Simoom, in which he served the remainder of the war, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1918.[3]

Nicholl was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1926.[4]

Nicholl was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1932.[5]

World War II

Nicholl was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1939.[6]

Nicholl was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 July, 1948.[7]

Nicholl was placed on the Retired List on 8 May, 1951.[8]
